With the .NET platform, Microsoft is redefining application development for both the Windows and web environments. This emerging technology will have a dramatic impact on how applications are developed and deployed, with unprecedented levels of flexibility, scalability and interoperability. Using one of a host of different development languages, components and applications can be developed that run in the managed environment of the Common Language Runtime. These can then be exposed over the web as services, or be deployed as part of a traditional n-tier application.
