Communicating in English has become increasingly important to you professionally. While you manage to convey your ideas well enough in spoken English, putting them down in writing is not as easy. And once a native speaker has finished editing your texts, they’re almost unrecognizable.
Learning aspects
This course is designed to help increase your proficiency in English writing with a strong emphasis on structure, style and clarity. Reading material and multimedia tools will be used (along with plenty of conversation) to help you develop the skills you need to write effectively in English.
Course components
You will receive brief writing assignments in English each week, as well as sometimes during the class. Examining the way the English-language media present news, current affairs and opinion (also in comparison to the style more typical of the Dutch media) will help you to recognise and master the basics of English-language writing and reporting. The entire writing process (finding and clarifying ideas, drafting, writing, editing and rewriting) will be discussed in depth. Reviews of grammar and reference material provided by the instructor will help you solve particular technical problems.
Participants
Course participants have a high proficiency in English comprehension and have no trouble understanding native speakers, reading English language texts or speaking English.
Some course participants are journalists. Some are academics who need to publish in English whilst others work in communications or public relations. Others work in the international milieu and some simply yearn to improve their English in order to create business proposals, reports or press releases. The instructor will adapt each course to the needs of the current group and their stated reasons for taking the class.
